RØNNE – The court at Bornholm's Police has found three men guilty of smuggling 1.7 tons of fireworks with the fast ferry Express 1 between Ystad in Sweden and Rønne on Bornholm.
The three men are respectively 26, 56 and 53 years old, and all three have been sentenced to 20 days' probation. The youngest was a driver, and he must pay a fine of DKK 16,000. The other two, who were respectively the salesperson and the driver, must each pay DKK 15,000 in fines.
The court found it proven that it was a planned transport knowing that this is in violation of applicable regulations.
Routine checkOn 28 December 2021, a van with a large amount of fireworks was stopped at the ferry's arrival in Rønne. It happened in connection with a routine check.
During the night, the driver had picked up 1.7 tonnes of fireworks with a gunpowder weight of 178.8 kg, which were distributed on four pallets, from a dealer in Jutland.
Since fireworks are dangerous goods and cannot come on the fast ferry for safety reasons, he had been instructed to remove the signs on the car that indicated the cargo was dangerous.
Concealed the transportThe driver removed the signs at a gas station approx. 20 kilometers before Ystad.
Alternatively, the transport should have been by ferry from Køge.
The large amount of fireworks had to be distributed to XL-Byg in Rønne and Allinge.
