HUNTING - The Danish nature offers many exciting game species, and among the Danish big game we gradually come across the stately crown game in many places.
On the other hand, it is many years ago that the last wild boars from the original Danish wild boar population and the wolf were exterminated in Denmark. That both game species have since returned, as either vagrants or permanent residents, is another story.
In the 18th century, a violent shooting of the Danish wild boars began, which were certainly not popular with the farmers, because the pigs caused great damage to the crops.
In the book "Den danske jagt i fortid og nutid" (
H. Hirschsprungs Forlag, 1947) it is said that in 1803 one of the last wild boars was shot at Mejlgaard in Jutland by the farm's marksman. But the shooter had to flee up a tree because the animal was not hit by the first shot and therefore ran after him in a rage!
The wolf survived in Denmark until around 1800. Large wolf hunts were held, and when a wolf den with cubs was found, it was not uncommon for the cubs to be dug out and killed. The last wolf of the original population that was shot here in Denmark is believed to be a large male wolf that was killed at Skive in 1813.
